Animal Careers Explorer FAQs

Animal_Careers_ExplorerWhat Is the Animal Careers Explorer Program?

Animal Careers Explorer is a program sponsored by the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, in collaboration with Boy Scouts of America. This program allows students ages 13 to 21 (primarily 16+) to explore their personal career interests. Student members join other teens who share a career goal or hobby interest in animals, together demonstrating their support and commitment to helping animals in the shelter and in the community. We hope that the Animal Careers Explorer program will inspire each student's own involvement and responsibility, while cultivating an atmosphere of caring.

How Does It Work?

The program fee is $10 for the year and consists of meetings held on the second Saturday of each month from September to April, plus a final project, the Furry Skurry, in May. Animal Careers Explorer meetings include:

  • Guest speakers who present animal vocations
  • Service projects
  • Time for socializing Humane Society of Greater Dayton animals

Students who are at least 16 years old can earn hands-on learning opportunities outside of group meetings, including helping with events and/or volunteering at the facility.

Why Do It?

There are a number of advantages to joining the Animal Careers Explorer program. One of the big reasons is the opportunity to meet professional people who are already working on behalf of animals. They can help students make decisions about their futures. Students will also meet other young people who want to make a difference for animals. These special connections can have a lasting impact.

Becoming Animal Careers Explorers will also benefit students in the future, as they apply for college or employment. What students choose to do now in their spare time makes a difference later in life. Employers and college recruiters look for people who have volunteered their time and have worked on special service projects.

There are many teen clubs around the country whose members receive recognition for the wonderful things that they do. We think our young people should too!

Each level in the Animal Careers Explorer program brings additional challenges. As students work their way up, they receive more opportunities and rewards.
